Fresh & Popular Foods

 

You don't always have to only feed your regular hamster food. It is always a good idea to give your hamster fresh foods such as fruits and vegetables. Although there are plenty of fresh foods that hamsters are able to eat, there are some dangerous foods as well. 

 

Safe fresh foods:

  • Apple (not the seeds)

  • Apricot

  • Asparagus

  • Banana

  • Basil

  • Bean Sprouts

  • Blackberry

  • Blueberry

  • Brocolli

  • Brussel Sprouts

  • Cabbage

  • Carrot

  • Cauliflower

  • Celery

  • Cherries (not the pits)

  • Chestnuts

  • Coconut

  • Corn on the cob)

  • Cranberry

  • Cress

  • Cucumber

  • Dates

  • Dill

  • Fig

  • Grapes (seedless)

  • Green Beans

  • Kale

  • Kiwi

  • Loganberry

  • Lychee

  • Mango

  • Melon

  • Mint (plant only)

  • Papaya

  • Parsley

  • Peach (not the pit)

  • Pear (not the seeds)

  • Peas

  • Peppers (red, yellow, green etc)

  • Plum (not the pit)

  • Potato (cooked)

  • Rhubarb (cooked)

  • Spinach

  • Squash (e.g. butternut)

  • Star Fruit

  • Water Melon (small quantities, high in water content)

Unsafe fresh foods:

  • Chili

  • Garlic

  • Kidney Beans

  • Leek

  • Lemon 

  • Lime

  • Iceberg lettuce

  • Onion

  • Orange 

  • Potato Leaves

  • Pineapple

  • Rhubarb Leaves

  • Spring Onion

  • Tomato & Tomato Leaves

 

 

Other safe foods: 

  • Almonds (Remove from shell, the shell is very toxic)

  • Baby Food (Never onion and garlic) 

  • Boiled Potato

  • Brazil Nuts

  • Cat Biscuits

  • Cashew Nuts

  • Chicken (plain & cooked)

  • Cheese (Small amounts)

  • Coconut (no sugar added)

  • Crickets (dead, storebought)

  • Dog Biscuits (Milk Bones, Greenies, etc. )

  • Egg (boiled or scrambled)

  • Fish (cooked)

  • Hazel Nuts

  • Meal Worms (Purchased from pet store) 

  • Millet Seed/Millet Spray

  • Nuts

  • Pasta (Cooked or Dry)

  • Pecan Nuts

  • Peanuts

  • Pistachio Nuts

  • Prunes

  • Raisins

  • Sweet Chestnuts 

  • Turkey (plain and cooked)

  • Walnuts
