Hamster Species

 

There are many diferent species of hamster, however only five are domestic. These species are the Syrian Hamster, the Roborovski Dwarf hamster (sometimes known as Robo), the Russian Campbell's Dwarf hamster, the Winter White Dwarf hamster, and the Chinese hamster. I would like to clarify that sometimes when you go to a pet store the hamsters are labeled incorrectly such as the "Teddy Bear hamster" or "Sunfire hamster" and the "Bluberry hamster" and many more. I can assure you that these names are all false, Syrian, Roborovski, Russian Campbell's, Winter White, and Chinese hamsters are the correct names for the five domestic hamster species. Many people are also confused with the classification of hamster types. A question I get asked quite frequently is are the different types classified as breeds or species? The answer is species. Yes, they are all hamsters, but they are all a separate species. For instance a Syrian hamster can not mate with a Dwarf hamster, becuase they are a different species.
